Toxic Tap Water: Millions of Americans Exposed to Dangerous Contaminants

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), an estimated 15 million Americans may be exposed to dangerous and potentially cancer-causing contaminants like lead, uranium, and arsenic in their tap water. The EWG analyzed data from more than 50,000 public water systems across the US and found that over 270 contaminants were present in US drinking water at levels above what scientists say pose a minimal health risk.

The Lansing water crisis, that occurred in 2018 has affected many residents of the city of Lansing, Michigan. The city issued a “Do not drink” advisory for certain areas of the city, indicating that the water was unsafe for drinking, bathing, and cooking due to a high level of PFAS chemicals present in the water supply. PFAS chemicals are harmful and known to cause several health issues, including developmental problems, reproductive issues, and cancer. 

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the total number of serious injuries and deaths related to the Lansing water crisis is yet to be determined. However, potential harms and concerns were on the rise with a significant number of concern arose.
